From Nipper to Cadet (13 – 15 years)

Becoming a Cadet and moving into U14s is an exciting milestone because members become eligible to work towards their Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC), which is the first nationally recognised lifesaving award.

To prepare for this transition, U14 members are required to:

  • Have their own personal email address
  • Set up their own Surf Life Saving Members Hub account (click here to learn how)
  • Obtain a Unique Student Identifier (USI) number (click here to find or create your USI)
  • Ensure their personal details are accurate and up to date

These requirements help ensure qualifications can be accurately recorded and awarded.

Why does my child need their own email address?

From U14 onwards, members are undertaking nationally recognised training and receiving important communications relating to courses, assessments and qualifications.

Having their own email address:

  • Supports independent member engagement
  • Allows direct communication regarding training and awards
  • Ensures qualifications and records are linked to the correct individual
  • Assists with creating and managing a Unique Student Identifier (USI)

Parents are encouraged to maintain access where appropriate, but the email address should belong to the member.

What is the Surf Life Saving Members Hub?

The Members Hub is Surf Life Saving Australia’s online member management system. Members can use the Members Hub to:

  • View qualifications and awards
  • Update personal details
  • Complete online learning modules
  • Register for courses
  • Access training resources
  • Track patrol and membership records

Each U14 member should have their own login credentials rather than relying on a parent’s account.

Our office can assist families if they experience any difficulties accessing the Members Hub.

What is a USI and why does my child need one?

A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is a personal reference number that creates a secure online record of nationally recognised training completed in Australia. The USI belongs to the individual for life and is used across all recognised training providers. A USI is required before nationally recognised qualifications can be issued. Without a valid USI:

Training may be completed, but nationally recognised qualifications cannot be formally awarded or recorded.

Obtaining a USI before commencing SRC training helps prevent delays and administrative issues. It is thus strongly recommended that U14 members obtain their USI at the beginning of the season and before commencing SRC training. This ensures all qualification paperwork can be processed promptly once assessments have been completed.

What happens when my child gains their SRC?

Once all course requirements are successfully completed and a valid USI has been provided:

  • The Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) is awarded to the member.
  • The qualification is recorded against their personal training record.
  • The award appears in their Surf Life Saving membership profile.
  • The qualification becomes part of their lifelong training record.

Maintaining accurate member records ensures qualifications are correctly recognised, future training pathways can be completed without delay, patrol eligibility can be verified, and national training records remain accurate. This becomes increasingly important as members progress to qualifications such as:

  • Bronze Medallion
  • First Aid
  • Advanced Resuscitation Techniques
  • IRB Crew
  • Leadership and training qualifications
