Courses & Awards

New and returning members to our Club can undertake a range of courses to obtain the skills necessary to be involved in patrols on our beach. From an Observers Award to First Aid, a Surf Rescue Certificate or a full Bronze Medallion certification, there is a course for you. You must become a member of our club to be able to access our courses.

Skills Maintenance

For returning Bronze and SRC award holders, our Skills Maintenance courses (formerly known as Proficiency) ensure you keep your skills up to date annually to make sure we always provide a safe environment for our beachgoers.

It is mandatory to complete a Skills Maintenance course each season.

Skills Maintenance (Proficiency)

Unique Student Identifier (USI)

All SLS members are required to obtain a Unique Student Identifier (USI) to be able to complete courses. To create a USI visit www.usi.gov.au:

  • Have one piece of identification in front of you (Birth Certificate, Licence, Medicare Card or Passport).
  • Follow the directions to ‘Create a USI‘.
  • Send your USI number to administrator@palmbeachsurfclub.com.au for our records (this can be done from within the USI website)

Awards available and course dates

Below are all the awards and certificates available to new and current members. The club covers the costs of these courses for our members. Please note there are some additional prerequisites for certain courses. These details are released prior to course sign-up before RSVPing.

Bronze medallionBronze Medallion courses at our club are usually run over 6 weeks: Wednesday evenings from 6-9pm and Saturday mornings from 7-10am. DATES TO BE ADVISED
Six week course held Wednesdays 6-9pm and Saturday mornings. Also includes an additional day for a full First Aid course.

Participants must be a minimum of 15 years of age at the start of the course and be able to complete a 400m pool swim in under 9 minutes. Participants will be taught the skills necessary to be a patrolling lifesaver.
Surf Rescue CertificateThe Surf Rescue Certificate provides participants with the skills and knowledge of basic patrolling and surf awareness in order to be able to participate in lifesaving operations and act in the role of Water Safety Personnel. (SRC – CPR Endorsed, for 13 years old and above)DATES TO BE ADVISED

Participants must be a minimum of 13 years of age.
Surf Rescue Certificate Intensive CourseAn intensive course for Nippers 13-15 years who can demonstrate they are already proficient at board skills and ocean swimming.

Participants must be a minimum of 13 years of age.
Officials courseAll Clubs need to provide Officials at all carnivals across Nippers, Seniors and Masters. Our Club needs members to qualify to assist with our growing competition numbers. If you don’t have an active role at the club, this award is a great way to have fun and get involved!All courses held at Point Danger Branch.

Members must hold a minimum of Observers Award, or be in the process of completing SRC or Bronze Medallion.
Advanced Resuscitation Techniques (ART)ART courses are held at different clubs and members can attend any club.All courses commence at 8am

Must hold a Bronze Medallion and First Aid HLTAID001.
Marine LicensePlease note: This is the only course the Club does not cover. Courses are often held at PDB.
You are required to have a Marine License prior to undertaking your IRB Drivers course. Point Danger Branch can facilitate this instead of going through a private operator.

IRB Crew Member & IRB Driver
Our club partners with Tallebudgera SLSC to deliver IRB courses. Each Patrol Group must have at least one of each on each patrol, and IRB crews are often required at Nipper carnivals. These are crucial skills for our lifesavers to obtain.DATES TO BE ADVISED

Members must have a Bronze Medallion.
IRB crew award is a prerequisite to obtain IRB Driver.
Members must have a Marine Boat Licence before commencing IRB Driver course.
IRB Buoy and Can layingCourse teaches how to lay and pick up ‘cans’ at the beginning and end of carnivals and understand the effect surf and current has on the cans. It is a very good course for those members who are helping with water safety.DATES TO BE ADVISED

Open to all IRB drivers and Crewies.
Beach Management (Silver Medallion)
Patrol Captain’s Course
This new course allows you to become a Patrol Captain. Courses are held at the Point Danger Branch office in Currumbin. Now a 2-day course
• 01 & 08 December (6pm-9pm) AND 11 December (8.30pm-4pm)
Must hold a Bronze Medallion.
Observers courseAn Observers course is a great course for parents who volunteer their time to become a Nipper Age Group Manager, but also for members who may want to patrol as a first aid officer but do not wish to enter the surf. DATES TO BE ADVISED

SSV Operator InductionRelated to patrolDATES TO BE ADVISEDMust hold a Bronze Medallion.
