Surf lifesavers are trained volunteers who patrol Queensland beaches on weekends and public holidays, ensuring public safety. They wear the iconic red and yellow uniform and handle rescues, first aid, emergency care, and surf safety education. The focus is on preventative action, minimizing hazards and risks before emergencies occur.

How do I become a surf lifesaver?

  • Becoming a surf lifesaver is a rewarding and fun experience, offering fitness, first aid training, friendships, surf sports, and community service.
  • Our courses are usually held over a 6-week period. Courses dates and details can be found in our Club Calendar.
  • To join, individuals can enrol in the Surf Rescue Certificate (ages 13-15) or Bronze Medallion course (15+ years), which run several times a year over six weeks.
  • Graduates receive their uniform and are assigned to a patrol group.

How often would I be on patrol?

  • Patrols occur every 3-4 weeks from mid-September to early May, with shifts lasting 4-5 hours.
  • Morning patrols start between 7:00-8:00 am, and afternoon patrols end between 5:00-6:00 pm, depending on the time of year.
