Palm Beach has had a rich history of Surf Boat racing. More recently our history has continued under the reins of Arnie Eussen who has developed two competitive crews of boat rowers. Palmy had a Male Reserve team known as the ‘Sultans’ and a Female Reserve team known as the ‘Vixens’.
What is Surf Boat Racing?
A boat crew has five people: four rowers and one sweep. The sweep controls the boat with an oar and directs the rowers. Boat crews start at the water’s edge holding their boats ready. On the starting signal, crews row around their assigned turning buoy situated approximately 400m offshore and return to the beach. The winner is the first crew to pass their boat between the finish flags on the beach.
Crews compete in approximately 10 events throughout a season:
- ASRL Open in Shellharbour (300+ crews)
- Coffs Harbour Annual craft carnival
- The Navy Series (Tugun, Tallebudgera & Mermaid)
- BP QLD Cup (Maroochy, Coolum & Alex Headlands)
- State Titles
- Aussie Titles
Note: Palm Beach do not currently have a team competing in Surf Boat racing. If you are interested in learning more about the discipline or in starting a team, please contact our Club Administrator.
