A Loggerhead turtle nest area was discovered near the Club, which wasn’t so great for the baby turtles.
Sure, they could become members, and even join Nippers (!), but we were more concerned that the sand near us was actually too cold for turtle eggs to incubate. They were in trouble.
So in swooped the wonderful folk at TurtleWatch, and the eggs were relocated to SeaWorld for incubation, where they hatched two months later.
It was upon their return to the original nest that things got awkward. You see, we were the cause of the turtles heading to the Club and not the ocean. And we didn’t want that!
It turns out that little hatchlings confuse our bright lights for the moon and they head to the Club. So we stuck our neck out and decided to flip the switch!
In collaboration with the lighting gurus at Raylinc Lighting and the turtle-saving superstars at TurtleWatch, gone are the bright, blinding floodlights that turned our deck into a turtle disco.
We’ve swapped the lights out for eco-friendly, amber wavelength lights that won’t mess with our shelled friends’ sense of direction.
No more turtle tangos on the sand—just smooth sailing toward the ocean and adulthood!
Here’s the scoop:
Orb Lights Out: Six orb lights on the deck? Gone! Now it’s just the right mood lighting for turtles to find the ocean without a hitch.
LUX Values Reduced: We’ve dropped our lighting from a bright 31 to a cool 7. These lights emit an amber wavelength which does not interfere with migratory species such as turtles.
Basically, the turtle equivalent of turning off your annoying neighbor’s high beams!
